BC Hockey Officials Night

by Staff Writer / Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks Centre and BC Hockey were proud to host 8 minor hockey referees at GM Place on January 25, 2010. The participants were able to meet NHL referees Kerry Fraser, Mike Leggo and linesmen Lonnie Cameron and Scott Cherry. The BC Minor Hockey refs were selected through a BC Hockey contest which asked 13-17 year old minor hockey referees to submit a story about how they would recruit a friend to become involved in officiating.

The winning officials were: Paul Radnidge (New Westminster, BC), Zack Rickets-Colwell (Williams Lake, BC), Tyler Goudal (Port Coquitlam, BC), Connor Mayo (West Vancouver, BC), James Nugent (Vancouver, BC), Andrew Funk (Sidney, BC), Hayley Dawes (Nanaimo, BC) and Josiah Tsang (Richmond, BC).

The participants were treated to a Q&A session with the NHL officials and received some words of wisdom and advice. There were plenty of questions for the officials especially long time NHL referee Kerry Fraser. All the referees seemed just as enthusiastic as the minor hockey officials in being a part of this great opportunity.

BC Hockey Referee-In-Chief Rob Fryer had to remind the NHL officials that they had to go work a game as everyone seemed to be wrapped up in the experience. As the NHL officials headed off the minor hockey referees were able to watch Vancouver take on Buffalo, and watch Kerry Fraser ref his final game ever in Vancouver.

Minor Hockey official Josiah Tsang detailed about his experience:

"Meeting referees Kelly Fraser, Mike Leggo and linesmen Lonnie Cameron and Scott Cherry was a remarkable and inspiring experience that I will never forget. During their presentation, they told us about their officiating careers, kindly answered all our questions, and also gave us advice on refereeing. It was by far the most memorable game that I have ever attended."
