2015 NHL Draft Live Blog - Round 1

by Derek Jory / Vancouver Canucks
With the 23rd overall pick, the Vancouver Canucks select...

What's up everybody! Derek Jory here, coming at you live from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, as I listen to Flo Rida in a florid shirt.

I'll be bringing you all the action from the 2015 NHL Draft; rumours will be in italics, confirmed confirmations in bold and general nonsense everywhere else. I won't report every pick, instead focusing on what you aren't seeing or hearing from other outlets. Martin Brodeur is pacing right below where I'm sitting. Why? Is he coming out of retirement? Does he want to play for the Canucks? WHAT IF WE HAD A GOALIE CONTROVERSY IN VANCOUVER!

If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or you just want to say hi, leave a comment below, tweet @VanCanucks using the hashtag #Canucksdraft or shout it from a rooftop. I'll hear you.

Let's do this.

FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2015

6:00 p.m. (EST) -- I'd love to hear who you guys think the Canucks will pick 23rd overall tonight. And no I'm not available to be drafted, but I wore a suit tonight juuuuuuust in case.

6:05 p.m. (EST) -- Because of their recent trade, the Boston Bruins (shudder) are now picking 13th, 14th & 15th tonight. I'd like to wish the Bruins content team luck covering that insanity.

6:15 p.m. (EST) -- Are you sitting there wondering how many selections each NHL team has this draft? Well golly, you’re in luck! (Note: This WAS current, then the Flames, Bruins and Kings messed that all up. I'll try to find an updated version)

6:30 p.m. (EST) -- Great fan turnout for tonight. Upper bowl is packed. Lots of noise too - just like a regular hockey game in Florida, right??

6:50 p.m. (EST) -- Just visited the Canucks suite where these three former players were catching up. Who are they and what year did they play in Vancouver together?

6:55 p.m. (EST) -- Before the draft can start, the NHL does a team-by-team roll call. Boston was just booed heavily (and not just by us!!); Montreal got the biggest boo of all, while Vancouver escaped unharmed.

7:17 p.m. (EST) -- There you have it, the Edmonton Oilers select Connor McDavid with the 1st overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Was anyone else maybe hoping a teensy bit they’d screw up the pick? Like pronounce his name wrong and there actually be a Conner MacDavid at the draft, ranked like 857th overall, and the Oilers were forced to take him instead because of the NHL’s strict no taksies backsies rule? NO?!? Oh come on.

Don’t you ever quit being so Edmonton, Edmonton.

7:19 p.m. (EST) -- One down, 22 to go...

7:33 p.m. (EST) -- Early thoughts: After McDavid was selected, the Pirates of the Caribbean theme played, after Eichel it was the song from Avengers and Dylan Strome walked to the stage to the Jurassic Park theme – edge Strome; props to Buffalo GM Tim Murray for how he announced the second overall pick – no yadda, yadda, yadda, simply “The Buffalo Sabres select Jack Eichel.”

7:53 p.m. (EST) -- Tick, tock. We're nearly a third of the way to Vancouver's 23rd overall pick. Management remains busy at the table; Benning has been on the phone a lot. Also, owner Francesco Aquilini is now at the table, beside Trevor Linden.

8:52 p.m. (EST) – Where’s Jory and what have you done with Jory and why are there no blog updates? My apologies, but I had to run up to the Canucks suite because Roberto Luongo surprised a young boy from Canuck Place named Jaxson Creasey, who just had his dream come true thanks to Children’s Wish. It was an incredible moment.

9:02 p.m. (EST) -- The Winnipeg Jets just made their pick, meaning six more selections and we're up.

9:38 p.m. (EST) -- With the 23rd overall pick, the Vancouver Canucks select Brock Boeser from Waterloo of the USHL.

9:39 p.m. (EST) -- I like the cut of Boeser’s jib. He’s got swagger, but not chip on his shoulder he’s a first round pick he’s a gift to the hockey world type swagger, natural swagger. I dare to say Boeser would look cool getting out of a hammock – previously believed to be impossible.

Here's some colour on the newest Canuck: NHL team: Minnesota Wild NHL player: Derek Stepan Shootout move: "Stick handle in, shoot low glove/blocker" Goal celebration: "One knee up, small downward punch" Video game: NHL 15 Movie: Never Back Down TV show: Gossip Girl Actor: Blake Lively Music group: One Direction Website: YouTube Sport (other than hockey): Baseball Athlete (non-hockey): Brett Favre

I’m heading down to meet our new draftee and get the lowdown on everything. Follow @VanCanucks on Twitter, Canucks on Instagram and Vancanucks on Snapchat for exclusive behind the scenes madness.

12:48 a.m. (EST) -- Sleep is for the weak! Just got back to the hotel and I had a few thoughts to share about Boeser from following him around after he was drafted. The kid is funny and light-hearted, seems intelligent and the flow to his hair is legit. He went parasailing the morning of the draft, had 157 congratulatory texts at last check and had almost doubled his Twitter followers. He's from Minnesota and is a Vikings fan, but is also a Green Bay Packers fan. WHAT? His mom is from Green Bay, so he grew up a cheesehead, yet his brother married a Vikings cheerleader and now he's torn between teams. We'll have more with Brock and his family Saturday morning.

12:49 a.m. (EST) -- Get some sleep, big day tomorrow.
