Welcome to 2015 NHL Free Agency Day, or as I like to call it, the day I stay off Instagram because all my friends are at the beach and I’m at work. Sob story aside, there’s lots in store for today and I’m actually working on some press releases already, so stay tuned.
Follow along all day for the latest and greatest on all things Canucks; rumours are in italics, confirmed signings are bold and most importantly, no Orange Is The New Black discussion. I have two episodes remaining in Season 3 and spoilers are the devil.
Here we go.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 2015
8:30 a.m. (PST) -- Oh hey there, how are you? Those pajamas are the bomb, but it's time to wipe that sleep out of your eyes - roster moves are coming...
8:30 a.m. (PST) -- Happy Canada Day! Where and how are you spending it?
8:45 a.m. (PST) -- I've heard of TV drinking games, but not workout games. Let's change that. If you're following today's coverage on Sportsnet or TSN, do 10 pushups every time they say FRENZY, 10 situps every time a joke flops and if they discuss the Canucks and you disagree with what they say, 10 jumping jacks. We're all going to have sculpted beach bodies when today is said and done!
9:00 a.m. (PST) -- Free agency is officially open.
9:09 a.m. (PST) -- A signing already! Yannick Weber has been re-signed by the Canucks. Welcome back Yannick!
9:10 a.m. (PST) -- Stick with Sportsnet. TSN just reported the Canucks have signed MIKE Weber. Facepalm.
9:10 a.m. (PST) -- I’m 30 pushups in and have done 40 sit-ups…it’s going to be a long day.
9:48 a.m. (PST) -- Where have I been? Did I fall asleep? Here's a hint: if I've gone quiet, moves are coming. Who do you think builds the press releases and tweets the news?!? My apologies, Haruo Chikamori.
9:50 a.m. (PST) -- Any chance we could pause free agency for 15 minutes? I expected a quiet morning, so I worked out in the Canucks gym and am now the stinky bearded guy in the office. Pause. Please. Shower. Needed.
9:55 a.m. (PST) -- Welcome to the Canucks, Matt Bartkowski! GM Jim Benning just inked the defenceman, who previously played for the Bruins. Apparently he can also work a camera – watch your back Jeff Vinnick…
10:00 a.m. (PST) -- More on Bartkowski: The 27-year-old spent the 2014-15 season with the Boston Bruins, collecting four assists and 37 penalty minutes in 47 games. He has appeared in 131 career games with Boston, recording 24 assists and 77 penalty minutes. The Pittsburgh, PA native was originally selected in the seventh round, 190th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
10:03 a.m. (PST) -- All the best, Richie!
10:21 a.m. (PST) -- Everyone is talking Kessel to the Penguins right now, but let's stick with the Canucks. Reactions are positive thus far for the early moves Benning has made.
What are your thoughts? Any names out there you'd love to see with the Canucks?
10:47 a.m. (PST) -- Canucks sign goaltender Richard Bachman. Welcome to the West Coast, Richard!
11:13 a.m. (PST) -- Official: Canucks acquire Brandon Prust from the Canadiens in exchange for Zack Kassian and a 2016 5th round pick. Welcome Brandon!
11:19 a.m. (PST) -- Thanks Kass. Best of luck in Montreal.
11:29 a.m. (PST) -- Canucks sign defenceman Taylor Fedum. Welcome Taylor!
11:29 a.m. (PST) – More on Fedum: Fedun split the 2014-15 season between San Jose and the Worcester Sharks. He collected four points (0-4-4) in seven games with San Jose and 34 points (6-28-34) in 65 games with Worcester, where he was tied for fourth in team scoring. He also appeared in four playoff games for Worcester, notching one goal. The 27-year-old Edmonton, Alberta native has appeared in 11 career NHL games with San Jose and the Edmonton Oilers, posting six points (2-4-6) and four penalty minutes.
11:40 a.m. (PST) -- That legit a frenzy. Busy morning for the Canucks AND I even snuck in a short shower before the Prust/Kassian deal was announced.
What are your thoughts on today's actions by Vancouver?
12:03 p.m. (PST) -- Exclusive: Linden welcomes Bartkowski to the Canucks.
12:05 p.m. -- Interesting tweet below:
1:12 p.m. (PST) -- That appears to be a wrap on things for the Canucks? THe question mark is there because Jim Benning just spoke to the media and said the team is still working on things, but it's time to hit the beach! So we'll see what wins out. Either way, quote of the day goes to Benning, who was asked with Derek Dorsett thought of the team acquiring Prust. "He texted me and said thank you," laughed Benning. Prust & Dorsett. Boom.
1:14 p.m. (PST) -- Thank you for spending part of your Canada Day with me (or Wednesday if you live anywhere else!), see you at the beach!
