Larry Ashley Memorial Scholarship awarded for

18th yearAspiring athletic therapist Blake Barry awarded the Larry Ashley Memorial Scholarship at CATA Conference

This past May, the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) held their 47th annual national conference in Toronto, Ontario, where the most eminent members of the field were honoured and celebrated. Among the distinctions presented at the conference was the Larry Ashley Memorial Scholarship, an annual award that the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association and CATA have been proud to present to aspiring athletic therapists across the country since 1996.

Larry Ashley served with the Canucks’ training staff for 14 years before passing away to cancer in 1995. In honour of the former head trainer, the annual scholarship recognizes CATA certification candidates who have demonstrated commitment to developing practical and academic athletic therapy skills within the sport of hockey. Presented by former Canucks goaltender Frank Caprice, this year’s $2,500 scholarship was awarded to Blake Barry, an aspiring athletic therapist based out of Ontario.

Born and raised in the small farming community of Downeyville, Ontario, Barry is entering his third year of studies at Sheridan College (Brampton, Ontario) in the Athletic Therapy program. Barry’s beginnings in the field as a pee wee trainer quickly progressed into larger roles at the junior and university levels. After volunteering at the 2011 Memorial Cup, he accepted a position with the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads. Working with the junior team’s head athletic therapist and equipment manager, Barry has effectively balanced his time with the Steelheads and his studies at Sheridan College for the past two years.

Barry’s academic success at Sheridan, complemented by his tireless work at the amateur hockey level made him an ideal recipient of this year’s Larry Ashley Memorial Scholarship. Now in its 18th year of operation, the scholarship’s capacity to support aspiring athletic therapists such as Barry is an integral part of the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association’s efforts to honour the life of Ashley.

Congratulations, Blake!
