2011 Young Stars: Winnipeg

by Derek Jory / Vancouver Canucks

Winnipeg's prospects are a mix of the unknown, making the Jets a wild card team.

The Anaheim Ducks, one of the original five teams that made up the inaugural Young Stars Tournament, have been replaced by the reborn Winnipeg Jets this year.

I’m not sure if that was weird to read or not, but typing Winnipeg Jets in a factual hockey sentence has been a long time coming. Seeing the Jets on the ice will be as well, and fans in Penticton will be treated to seeing Winnipeg’s prospects together for the first time.

Your guess is as good as mine as to how this team will perform and what its chemistry will be like, all I know is that with four of Winnipeg’s top five draft picks from 2011 suiting up, fans will get a sneak peak at what the future has in store for the Jets.

You want to be in Penticton to check out the Jets, but: A – you don't want to lose the parking spot in front of your house, B – your psychic warned you about going out, C – the XFL is holding open tryouts or D – you're locked into a Three's Company marathon on Deja View; well don’t sweat it. Again. Like last year, has your back.

All eight games of the Young Stars Tournament will be available live on beginning September 11th. Full details on the Young Stars Tournament can be found at

Mark Scheifele

F - Drafted 1st round, 7th overall, in 2011 – His last name is hard to pronounce (it’s Shy-flea), but it isn’t difficult to see why the new Jets made him their first draft pick. The 18-year-old Barrie Colts centre was second on the team with 53 helpers and 75 points last season, his first in the OHL, he then made his home and native land proud with a Team Canada best six goals at the World Under-18 Championship.

Zach Yuen

D - Drafted 4th round, 119th overall, in 2011 – Yuen wanted to focus more on offence last season and the Tri-City Americans defenceman put his plan into action with a career-high eight goals, 24 assists and 32 points (seven goals, 21 helpers and 28 points more than his previous bests). He’s now a double-threat who can take goals away and help produce them at the other end.

Shayne Wiebe

F - Signed as free agent in 2011 – What would a Jory story be without me showing some love to my hometown Brandon Wheat Kings? Not that Wiebe needs my favoritism in the least; Brandon’s captain was seventh in WHL scoring with 44 goals for the Wheaties last season. He’ll slot in with the AHL’s St. John's IceCaps in 2011-12.

Ivan Telegin

F - Drafted 4th round, 101st overall, in 2010 by Atlanta – The native of Novokuznetsk, Russia, opted to make a move and play for the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit instead of remaining in his home country to find a path to the NHL, and so far so good for the 19-year-old centreman. He had 61 points (20-41-61) in 59 games last season and has averaged nearly a point a game in two years and 110 games with the Spirit; he made the OHL Second All-Rookie team in 2009-10.

Edward Pasquale

G - Drafted 4th round, 117th overall, in 2009 by Atlanta – Since entering the OHL in 2006-07, Pasquale has been a Bull, Duke, Spirit, Wolf and Gladiator, but he’s best described as a warrior. His 6-foot-2, 218-pound frame fills the net and he prevents the opposition from doing the same with quickness and smarts. He went 11-11-1 with a 2.93 GAA and .900 S% last season with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.
