Finnish forward Mikael Granlund found the back of the net to break a scoreless tie in the first period of Thursday’s quarter-final match against Denmark. Then, a mesmerizing passing play was finished off by Jarno Koskiranta just 1:45 into the second frame to put the Fins up 2-0.
Nonetheless, a determined Denmark squad replied on the power play at the 11:42 mark of the second period, as Habs forward Lars Eller converted on a one-timer from the right faceoff circle to pull his club within one.
Unfortunately for Denmark, a goal from Patrik Laine in the closing minutes of the second period restored Finland’s two-goal lead. Finland would not look back from there, adding a couple of insurance markers to put the game out of reach in the third period.
The 5-1 victory means Finland now awaits the winner of Russia vs. Germany, with the semifinals contest scheduled for May 21.
Czech Republic vs. USA
Tomas Plekanec and the Czech Republic squared off against the Americans in quarter-final action on Thursday.
Canadiens netminder Mike Condon played the back-up role to Keith Kinkaid, who was given the start against the Czech Republic after making 27 saves in a 3-2 loss to Slovakia on May 17.
The Czech Republic opened the scoring thanks to a rare penalty shot goal from Tomas Zohorna, who beat Kinkaid with a nifty move to the forehand. Auston Matthews, however, responded with a breakaway goal of his own to even the score in the second period.
As overtime solved nothing, a shootout was required to settle the score. That’s when Auston Matthews left his mark on the game once again, scoring the lone goal to give Team USA a 2-1 win and a spot in the semifinals against the winner of Canada vs. Sweden.
