Dylan Larkin (Detroit Red Wings) had two assists and Auston Matthews had an assist to help the United States defeat France 4-0 in a Group B preliminary-round game of the 2016 IIHF World Championship at Yubileiny Arena in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
Mike Condon (Montreal Canadiens) made 19 saves for his first shutout of the tournament.

After a scoreless first, the United States scored three goals in a span of 5:32 late in the second period. Chris Wideman (Ottawa Senators) scored on a power play at 14:23, then Matthews, No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of international skaters for the 2016 NHL Draft, set up Connor Murphy (Arizona Coyotes) at 16:30 for a goal to make it 2-0. J.T. Compher (Colorado Avalanche) made it 3-0 with five seconds remaining in the period.
"It was a real team effort out there," Condon told the IIHF website. "We tried to play our game and do the things we needed to get the win. That was important for us, and we are happy to come out with the win."
Brady Skjei (New York Rangers) scored early in the third period off a setup by Larkin.
The United States, which has two regulation-time wins and two regulation-time losses (2-0-0-2) will play Hungary (0-0-0-4) on Friday.

Canada 5, Germany 2:Taylor Hall (Edmonton Oilers) had two goals and Derick Brassard (Rangers) had two assists and Canada won a Group B preliminary-round game at Yubileiny Arena.
Hall's goal 3:12 into the third period, his second of the game, broke a 2-2 tie. Boone Jenner (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Cody Ceci (Ottawa Senators) scored in the third to make it 5-2.
Canada had taken a 2-0 lead on goals by Hall in the first period and Corey Perry (Anaheim Ducks) in the second. Patrick Reimer and Sinan Akdag scored for Germany in the second period to tie the game at 2-2.
Goalie Cam Talbot (Oilers) made 17 saves for Canada, which remained undefeated (4-0-0-0).
Germany (1-0-1-2) will play Belarus (1-0-0-3) on Friday. Canada will play Slovakia (2-0-0-2) on Saturday.
Russia 10, Denmark 1: Artemi Panarin (Chicago Blackhawks) had a goal and four assists to help Russia win a Group A preliminary-round game at Ice Palace in Moscow.
Russia scored three times in the first period, four times in the second and three times in the third. Sergei Bobrovsky (Blue Jackets) made 16 saves for Russia (3-0-0-1).
Vadim Shipachyov had two goals and three assists, Evgenii Dadonov had a goal and three assists and Sergei Mozyakin had two goals.
Jannik Hansen (Vancouver Canucks) scored for Denmark (1-0-1-2).
Denmark plays Latvia (0-0-2-2) on Friday. Russia plays Sweden (3-1-0-0) on Saturday.
Czech Republic 7, Norway 0:Lukas Kaspar scored twice, and Tomas Kundratek had two assists for the Czech Republic in a Group A preliminary-round game at Ice Palace.
David Pastrnak (Boston Bruins) had an assist on Roman Cervenka's goal at 5:11 of the first period and goalie Dominik Furch made 26 saves.
Czech Republic (3-1-0-0) will play Kazakhstan (0-1-0-3) on Friday.
