I flew over on Friday night. The flight itself wasn’t anything special. I took a sleeping pill after dinner to help me fall asleep on the plane and for the first time, it really helped me. I had a solid 4.5 hours of sleep. I got in Saturday morning and after breakfast I went on the ice with the team. We just had a light morning skate which really helped me sweat off that trip a little bit.
For my first few days here, I’ve just tried to rest a lot because I played that first game pretty much as soon as I got in. The time change got me next day, so I took a good nap in the afternoon and a long night of good sleep helped shake off more of the jet lag.
It’s been so quick between the end of the season and coming over but it wasn’t too bad getting into that first game on Saturday. We had a short practice on Sunday to get ready for our next game today against Norway. After all that, I feel it a little bit and my legs are really heavy. :-) But with good sleep it should be better and better.
I’m here by myself for now, no family or friends yet. Actually, we aren’t allowed to have any family with us. They obviously can travel on their own to see the games and sleep in the city but they’re not allowed to stay with us at the hotel. The Czech national team will pay their travel if we make it to semifinals, so at that stage, there might be some family members with us.
This is my fourth time at the World Championship. I’m still young and still learning a lot coming here. But you can bet that I would rather be playing in an exciting playoff run. Unfortunately things didn't work out as well as I would have liked them to. Anyway, these tournaments are always fun to play in. Your whole country is watching on TV, and I am proud to be playing for my national team.
We’re based in Zurich and I actually played on the exact same rink, maybe in 2000 or 2001. That was Under-18 Worlds. But we finished something like 6th so I don't really have good memories about that.
I’ve been trying to rest to get myself adjusted to the time change so I haven’t seen much of the sights, but downtown Zurich is maybe 10 minutes from our hotel so I am definitely planning to go there! What I heard from the guys is that it is really nice there so I can't wait to go.
The food here, well I can’t really say much about it. Don't get me wrong, it’s not bad at all, it’s just that I guess, we are at a Hilton hotel and I eat at hotels all over the US during the season, so I’m getting a little bit tired of hotel food. :-) Anyway, that trip downtown should help. There are lots of restaurants so finding something to eat for sure won’t be a problem. :-)
