For goaltenders, making the stop is often just the first step in fending off offensive threats; keeping opponents from getting second or even third chances is just as crucial, if not more so. In this episode of Skills and Drills with Les Canadiennes presented by Ford, Katia Clement-Heydra joins netminder Emerance Maschmeyer as she offers some pro tips on how best to direct the puck out of harm's way.
Focus on maintaining proper butterfly technique:
- Stay up in your stance and keep your balance forward;
- Ensure your butterfly isn't too wide, just in case you miss the shot with your stick and the puck hits your pads - this way, you don't kick the rebound out into the slot;
- Your glove should be up and out. Steer the puck into the corner with the angle of your stick.
