Defenseman Jeff Petry returned to the lineup after a four-game absence due to an upper-body injury.

Despite a strong start to the game for the Canadiens, it was the Penguins who opened the scoring after nine minutes of play, thanks to Kasperi Kapanen.
Pittsburgh finished the period leading 8-7 in shots, but Montreal still managed several solid scoring chances, with Artturi Lehkonen, Nick Suzuki, and Mike Hoffman all ringing iron.
In the second, after a string of penalties against the Canadiens, the Penguins finally capitalized on the power play with Kale Clague in the box for tripping and doubled their lead on Evan Rodrigues' ninth of the season at the 6:45 mark.
The Habs got back in the game not long after, however, with Laurent Dauphin recovering the puck in the corner and feeding it to Jonathan Drouin, who beat Pittsburgh starter Tristan Jarry with a slick move on the backhand.

Dauphin earned a helper on the play, his second in two games.
Mike Matheson gave the Pens another two-goal lead when his shot from atop the circle beat Jake Allen to make it a 3-1 game.
But, in the dying seconds of the middle frame, rookie Jesse Ylönen got his first career NHL goal to reduce the Habs' deficit to one goal.

Ylönen beat Jarry with a one-timer off a feed from Drouin, who picked up an assist on the momentous occasion.

Montreal headed to the room trailing 3-2 on the scoreboard and 26-15 in shots after 40 minutes.
Early in the third, the Penguins bolstered their lead once again when Sidney Crosby intercepted the puck and kept it in at the Montreal blue line, sending it to Brian Dumoulin who blasted it from the point for his first of the season at 0:28.
Brian Boyle made it a 5-2 game when he launched a wrister through traffic from the hashmarks with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
That's where things stood when the final buzzer sounded.
