Mathieu Perreault returned to the lineup to celebrate his 700th career NHL game.

Cole Caufield opened the scoring when he intercepted an Oilers clearing attempt, drove in, and sniped it top-corner from the faceoff dot at 10:58 of the first. It was the rookie's 13th point in 11 games.
The goal was scored unassisted.

Montreal's lead wouldn't last long, however, as Evander Kane beat Sam Montembeault 22 seconds later to even the score at 1-1.
Late in the period, with the Habs on the power play, Brendan Gallagher buried a rebound from Nick Suzuki's shot to score his first goal since returning from injury in late January and give the Habs a 2-1 lead.
Suzuki and Chris Wideman picked up assists on the tally.

Edmonton outshot Montreal 10-9 in the opening frame.
In the second, Ryan McLeod evened things up for Edmonton at the 5:37 mark.
Montreal challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the call on the ice was upheld after video review, and the Canadiens had to kill off a minor penalty as a result, which they did.
The Habs thought they had retaken the lead several minutes later while on the power play, with a pinpoint-precision goal by Suzuki. However, the Oilers used their coach's challenge and were successful in overturning the goal after it was determined Montreal was offside on the play.
Moments later, Chris Wideman fed Suzuki who sniped it in similar fashion and this time, the goal counted and Montreal took a 3-2 lead.
Wideman and Caufield got the assists.

Laurent Dauphin thought he had helped Montreal pad its lead with a shorthanded goal shortly afterwards, but the Oilers challenged the play and it was again overturned as it was determined the Habs were offside.
After a wild period of goals and near-goals, the Habs headed to the room with a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes, although the Oilers outshot the Canadiens 12-10 in the second.
The Canadiens added a shorthanded goal in the final stanza. After gaining control of the puck in their own end, Nick Suzuki fed Brett Kulak through the neutral zone, and the blue-liners drew Oilers defenders to goalie Mike Smith's right before sending the puck through the slot where Artturi Lehkonen had positioned himself to fire it into a gaping net and pad the Montreal lead.
It was Lehkonen's fourth goal in as many games.

Mike Hoffman added an empty-netter with 3:49 to go. It was his 200th career goal.
