Following the game, defenseman Jeff Petry, goaltender Jake Allen, forward Phillip Danault and interim head coach Dominique Ducharme spoke with reporters via Zoom.
Here are a few highlights from their respective chats:
Petry on the team's work against Connor McDavid until the latter stages of the third period:
I thought we did a good job at taking away his time and space early on and until that last 10 minutes. They were able to tie the game up and their momentum took over. Down the stretch, games are going to be tight. Whether we're up a goal or down a goal, we have to make sure that we're mature in our game and not stray away from it. They gained momentum from that goal and then they kept rolling.

Jeff Petry on the momentum shift in the third

Petry on the McDavid goal that put the Oilers ahead for good:
We gave him a chance to get the speed. We didn't control the puck very well there in the neutral zone and gave him a chance to wind it up. When he's got that much speed and we're following the play up, it's tough to get the feet moving backwards. I was trying to come in from the side, just to get my stick on the puck, and missed him. He was able to pull it out and shoot.

Allen on replacing Carey Price to start the second period:
I'm not going to sugarcoat it. Your routine's off, but that's happened numerous times in my NHL career, and I'm sure it's going to happen some more throughout the rest of it. To be honest, it's a little bit easier when it's at the start of a period than in the middle of a period. You have fresh ice and it gives you a couple of extra minutes in the dressing room to stretch. But, it's a quick turnaround. You've got to jump in there and get right at it.

Jake Allen on stepping in for Price mid-game

Allen on McDavid's highlight-reel individual effort:
Every time you see a guy like him, you've got to gain speed and gain ice. You've got to approach him differently than you approach other players. You've got to have some momentum. He did his thing. That's all I'm going to say. He took the game over.
Danault on the Canadiens' performance in the final frame:
We basically just defended in the third period. They created a lot of chances on the power play and they took over the rhythm of the game. They had scoring chances and we spent our energy defending. I think that's what cost us the game tonight.

Phillip Danault on the Habs' penalties

Danault on McDavid's game-winner:
He made his way through a few guys. There's only one exceptional player who can do that. We have to give him credit. He's the only guy who could've done that.
Ducharme on finding positives in the loss:
I liked our game, especially during the first two periods. I found that we lacked energy in the third and we didn't put on enough pressure. We did good work against their defensemen and we had more time in their zone. In the third period, every time we broke out of our zone, we were coming to the bench and changing and they were heading back our way. They definitely pushed at the end.

Dominique Ducharme on the loss to the Oilers

Ducharme on trying to keep McDavid at bay for 60 minutes:
In general, we did good work, even while short-handed. He made two plays at key times. They're key plays at important moments. Sometimes, a player like that can be the difference. He got the puck in a good position and he managed to beat our defensemen.
