Ottawa - January 30, 2013

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

The Habs may be in Ottawa for Wednesday night’s game against the Sens, but that’s not the only sports news on the docket in the nation’s capital. Just a few blocks from Scotiabank Place, over in Stittsville, ON, Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group – the group responsible for bringing CFL football back to Ottawa for a third time – announced the hiring of longtime Montreal Alouettes assistant GM Marcel Desjardins as the franchise’s “first” general manager. Having joined the league as the Rough Riders (yes, the same name as another franchise in an eight-team league – although Ottawa owned it first…) before folding and returning seven years later as the Renegades, the new club has whittled the search for a name down to five finalists: the Ottawa Red Blacks, Nationals, Raftsmen, Voyageurs and Rush. No word on whether the Ottawa Blue Bombers or Ottawa Alouettes cracked the Top 10…

Speaking of other sporting news in Ottawa, while we know how much Habs fans love to pack Scotiabank Place for Canadiens road games, we also realize it can be tough cheering for the visitors in another building. Well we found a way for you to enjoy SBP and root for the home team without having to worry about losing your membership to the Canadiens fan club.  Head to to buy tickets for the women’s World Championships in April and show your support for Team Canada – bonus points if you end up wearing your Habs jersey to the game!
