As you may recall, our last road trip with the team featured a tribute to the best outdoor rinks Manhattan has to offer. Well, New York, prepare to eat your heart out. Hockey aficionados looking to strap on the skates in the great outdoors in the nation’s capital have plenty of neighborhood rinks at the ready, but nothing beats the feeling of hitting the ice on the World’s Longest Skating rink. A UNESCO world heritage site, the Rideau Canal boasts 7.8 km of skateable surface with unmatched views of Parliament Hill and Beavertail and poutine booths sprinkled along the skateway.
Nothing beats spilling out of the Bell Centre after a big win and keeping the revelry going to the wee hours at one of the hundreds of bars located within walking distance of the downtown arena. We found Ottawa’s answer to post-game celebrations during our trip: after a game at Scotiabank Place, just take a $75 cab ride (or a convenient, hour-long bus ride) along the 417 to Elgin Street, or as it’s known locally, “Sens Mile”, to keep the party raging on all night (or, more accurately, until the 1:15 a.m. last call bell).
