The knockout rounds kicked off in Sochi on Tuesday with the tournament hosts needing a win versus Norway to stay in medal contention. With the pressure on, the Russian contingent delivered, winning 4-0 against the Norwegians.

Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexei Tereshenko and Alexander Radulov (x2) lit the lamp for the Russians, who held a narrow lead for most of the game before scoring twice in the final 1:07. Despite going pointless, Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin were both plus-2. The blueliners spent 18:09 and 18:32 on the ice respectively and each had one shot on net.

Tomas Plekanec and the Czechs overcame a late charge from the Slovaks to advance to the quarter-finals against Team USA. Plekanec had a goal and an assist in 19:39 of ice time.

Roman Cervenka (2 goals), Alex Hemsky and David Krejci also scored for the Czech Republic, who raced to a 3-0 lead early in the game. Marian Hossa (2 goals) and Tomas Surovy replied for Slovakia, who closed the gap to a single goal before Plekanec iced it in the final minutes with an empty-net goal. Slovakia outshot the Czechs 32-29.
