Montreal Canadiens Skate Drive presented by Sun Life Financial

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

MONTREAL (February 16, 2012) – In collaboration with Sun Life Financial, the Montreal Canadiens will be hosting their Annual New and Used Skate Drive on Sunday February 19 at the Bell Centre prior to the game against the New Jersey Devils. This community initiative will help fill the need of several local charities and youngsters for sports equipment.

Fans attending the game are invited to contribute by donating new or used skates to this cause. Player spouses along with Sun Life Financial volunteers will be at various entrances of the Bell Centre to collect the skates. By donating to this Skate Drive, fans will have the opportunity to win great prizes, including player-autographed items.

The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation’s BLEU BLANC BOUGE outdoor rink program will be a major beneficiary from this drive. Since 2008, the Foundation has built four multi-sport and refrigerated community rinks in the boroughs of Villeray-St-Michel-Parc-Extension, Montréal-Nord, Verdun and LaSalle. Over 45,000 kids have benefited from these infrastructures since the program was first unveiled.

Sun Life Financial encourages children to skate in their community

In February, as part of its partnership with the Montreal Canadiens, Sun Life Financial also offered three skating activities to over 200 elementary school children in Verdun, Montréal-Nord and St-Michel. Under the direction of experienced instructors, these skating sessions enabled children to enjoy themselves while learning various on-ice drills and skills. Participation from the Montreal Canadiens Alumni, Youppi!, healthy snacks and souvenir gifts were all part of these winter afternoon events.

"Sun Life Financial is pleased to be involved with this program that encourages youngsters to be more physically active. Kids have a passion for hockey, and for the Montreal Canadiens, so this is an excellent way to make physical activity and a healthier lifestyle part of their game plan," said Isabelle Hudon, president, Sun Life Financial, Quebec.
