Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick traded to Pittsburgh

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager, Kent Hughes, announced on Sunday that forwards Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick were traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Jeff Petry, goaltender Casey DeSmith, forward Nathan Legare and a second-round pick in 2025. The Penguins also retain 25% of Petry's salary.

Petry, 35, registered 31 points in 61 games with Pittsburgh last season (five goals, 26 assists). In 14 seasons in the NHL, the 6-foot-3, 201 lb right-handed blue-liner appeared in 864 regular season games with the Penguins, the Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers, recording 353 points (92 goals and 261 assists). He also added 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 48 postseason contests. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native was selected in the second round (45th overall) by the Oilers in the 2006 NHL Draft. He enjoyed success in Montreal, collecting over 40 points in four consecutive seasons from 2017-18 to 2020-21. He led the team's defensemen in points every season during that span.

A Rochester, New Hampshire native, DeSmith earned a 15-16-4 record in 38 games with the Penguins last season, posting a 3.17 goals-against average and .905 save percentage. The 31-year-old netminder has won 58 games and recorded nine shutouts in 134 NHL games.

Legare, a 22-year-old from Montreal, Quebec, played 68 games with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins in the AHL in 2022-23, registering eight goals and 11 assists. The 6-foot, 200 lb forward was selected in the third round (74th overall) by the Penguins in 2019.
