by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday that team captain Saku Koivu successfully underwent surgery to his left eye Saturday evening at Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal.

The surgery, performed by the Canadiens' team ophthalmologist Dr. John Little and retina specialist Dr. Mila Oh, became necessary to repair a tear in the retina of Saku Koivu's left eye, discovered during an examination performed by Dr. Little on Saturday afternoon.

Koivu is presently resting and his recovery will last several weeks.
