OK Google, who is credited with the popularization of the ice hockey mask?

Give the Assistant a break for this one, because the answer is no further than the
Google Canada homepage
.

Jacques Plante was permanently called up by the Canadiens on this day in 1954, and is being honored for his transformative career by the search engine giant with an illustrated "doodle" on Tuesday, as well as an in-depth editorial feature within the
Google Arts & Culture section
.
Plante won a record five consecutive Stanley Cups with the Habs -- six in total. In addition to popularizing the goalie mask, he also pioneered a more aggressive style of play which laid the groundwork for today's game.
His visage, along with his iconic equipment of choice, form the two Os in the Google logo, while the L is represented by -- what else -- a hockey stick.
A minimalist version of the "doodle", featuring only Plante's likeness, can also be found atop every results page.
