MONTREAL - Cristobal Huet’s role in the Canadiens' recent surge in the standings didn’t go unnoticed by the NHL, who named the Habs’ goalie the league’s third star for the month of January.
In the first month of 2008, Huet steamrolled the opposition, going 8-2-1 to help vault the Habs into fourth place in the Eastern Conference. In 11 games in January, the 32-year-old netminder also posted a 2.40 goals average.
“Sure it feels good, but we had a great month as a team and as a group,” explained Huet. “We also scored a lot of goals during our recent stretch while also limiting the scoring chances against us.”
By boosting his season record to 18-8-6, Huet now finds himself only one win shy of his career high of 19 set last season.
“I think he’s been playing really well since the end of December,” said head coach Guy Carbonneau. “He knew we had a tough schedule ahead of us and he really stepped up.”
This marks the second such league-wide honor for Huet who also was named the NHL’s third star of the month back in November 2006. Manny Almela is a writer for canadiens.com
