Hockey with heart

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

MONTREAL – How sweet would it be to give back to the community by playing hockey? The organization Five Hole for Food thought so, too.

During a 13-city, 19-day cross-country tour, the Five Hole for Food team made a pit stop at the Bell Centre for a quick game of street hockey benefitting Moisson Montreal.

“People have to make a donation to participate, whether they give money or food,” explained vice president of sponsorship and community relations, Samantha Rogers. “Last year, we collected 40,000 pounds of food. This year, our goal is 100,000 pounds. We made four stops in the Maritimes before coming here and we’ve already collected 20,000 pounds. We’re confident we’ll hit our target.”

A partner in the event via Molson Brewery, Canadiens owner and president – and former St. Lawrence University defenseman – Geoff Molson got in on the action on Monday afternoon to support the event.

“There are a lot of causes we take to heart, but this one in particular is special. It’s the third year Molson has been involved and we’re proud to be a part of this,” explained Molson before hitting the asphalt with former Habs Sergio Momesso and Gilbert Delorme.

Despite flanking two former pros, Molson had no trouble keeping up with Momesso and Delorme thanks to hours of training he’s been putting in with his boys. “I’m out there with my stick almost every day with my kids. And I still try to play hockey at least once a week now, but these days it’s definitely just for fun.”
