Hit the links with Mike Cammalleri

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
As adept with a pitching wedge as he is with a hockey stick, Mike Cammalleri can drain a birdie putt as easily as he can light up opposing goalies.  We checked in with the Habs’ new No. 13 to find out more about his favorite summertime pursuit.

We heard a rumor that you’re a scratch golfer. Is that true?
I used to be, but I’m not anymore. I don’t really get out there enough to keep that up; my handicap is a five these days.

How old were you when you started playing?
I was about 10 years old.

How many rounds do you usually get in during the offseason?
I try to play two or three a week if I can.

What’s the best you’ve ever shot?
I shot a 68 once. [Editor’s note: Cammalleri’s claim was made under the suspicious glare of Scott Gomez]. Hey, it’s true; I have proof! It was in a tournament – which I won!

Have you ever drained a hole in one?
Yes, two years ago in California. It was a 220 yard par 3. I was using a hybrid 3 at the time.
What’s your favorite club?
I’m pretty good with my hybrids.
Which club do you try to avoid at all costs?
Probably my 3 and 4 irons. I’d way rather use one of my hybrids to get better distance.

Have you ever played in any celebrity golf tournaments or any Pro-Ams?
I was actually supposed to play in the Wayne Gretzky tournament this year, but I couldn't make it in the end. That was pretty disappointing.

Who would you pick to be in your “Ultimate Foursome” for a dream round at any course you wanted?
Fred Couples is my favorite golfer and I’ve gotten to know him a little bit but never actually golfed with him before so he would be No. 1 on my list. Tiger woods would be there too, since he’s my second favorite golfer – and I’d bring Stevie, his caddy along with us for the help. My dad would have to be in my ultimate foursome, too, because to fully enjoy something like that you have to share it with somebody. I’d want to share that experience with him.  And I’d want to see their game at the course I’m a member at in the Toronto area called the National; it’s pretty tough so it’d be cool to see how they play out there.
