Habs notebook - October 10, 2008

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
MONTREAL - In today’s “Habs notebook” find out who’s ready to blow out some candles, what Andrei Markov has in common with Bobby Orr and more.

Happy anniversary: Before taking to the ice to face the Sabres, there might be some cake awaiting Carey Price.  Just one short year ago on October 10, 2007, the then-rookie netminder was victorious in his NHL debut in Pittsburgh, stopping 26 shots to lead the Canadiens to a 3-2 win over Sidney Crosby and Co.

The list gets longer: When newcomers Alex Tanguay and Robert Lang pull the famed Canadiens jersey over their heads tonight, they’ll become the 755th and 756th players to wear the sweater since the franchise was founded in 1909.  Fellow offseason acquisition Georges Laraque will have to wait a bit longer before adding to that list, as he recovers from a groin injury.

Markov the marksman: After setting up Sheldon Souray and Mark Streit on many power-play opportunities over the last few years, Andrei Markov will find himself in a new role this year -  that of the shooter.  This season, the 29-year-old, who will be joined by Alex Tanguay on the blue line, will aim to lead the Canadiens to the top of the heap with the extra attacker for a third consecutive campaign; no team has realized the feat since Bobby Orr and the Bruins in the 1970s.
