Habs Notebook - March 12, 2008

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
Love from the other room: After watching Carey Price do his best Martin Brodeur impression against his Devils, New Jersey coach Brent Sutter wasn’t short on praise for the Habs’ rookie goalie. Sutter was the one who cut Price from Team Canada prior to the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship, before seeing Price win gold at the 2007 World Juniors in Sweden.

“He played really well and deserve full marks for his performance,” said Sutter. “He’s a big kid who knows how to get in front of pucks. I wish our guys would have gotten more traffic in front of him and made his life a little tougher, but he saw all our shots and stopped them.”

Quote of the week: The honor goes to the Canadiens’ Maxim Lapierre following a 4-0 win over the Devils that included his gift-wrapped, open net goal courtesy of Sergei Kostitsyn.

“I know Sergei pretty well from playing with him in Hamilton. When he arrived in Montreal, I told Guillaume [Latendresse]: “If ever you’re playing with him, just keep your stick on the ice!”

Did someone say playoffs?: The postseason must almost be upon us, given the way Saku Koivu has caught fire of late. A renowned playoff performer, Koivu has piled up 13 points over his last 14 games, trailing only Alex Kovalev who has 19 points over the same span.

Sticking to a resolution: If Guy Carbonneau’s squad made one resolution back on Jan. 1, chances are it involved their performances at 1260 de la Gauchetiere Street. After stumbling to a 6-7-4 record in front of their home fans through Dec. 31 this season, the Habs have risen from the ashes on home ice with an 11-5-1 record at the Bell Centre so far in 2008.

The race to 40: On Thursday night, the Canadiens will look to reach the 40-win mark for the 36th time in team history, since they first hit the benchmark in 1954-55. Here’s a look back at how many games the Habs have needed to reach 40 wins since the early 1990s.
