STARS (5-5-1) @ CANADIENS (7-5-0)
The Canadiens will play their second game in as many nights on Tuesday when they play host to the Dallas Stars at the Bell Centre.
Michel Therrien’s squad will try to keep their momentum going after besting the Rangers 2-0 at Madison Square Garden in New York on Monday night. Tomas Plekanec and Alex Galchenyuk scored for the Canadiens, while Peter Budaj turned aside 27 shots to post his first shutout of the season and the 11th of his career. It was the fourth straight road victory for Montreal.
The Canadiens’ opponents on Tuesday were also on the ice on Monday night. The Stars provided new head coach Lindy Ruff with a 4-3 victory over the Sabres, the team that fired him last February. Vernon Fiddler, Alex Goligoski, Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn lit the lamp for Dallas, while Kari Lehtonen stopped 22 shots to pick up his fourth win of the season. The win was just the Stars’ second away from American Airlines Center this season.
The two clubs will square off for the first time since Feb. 21, 2012, when the Stars downed the Canadiens 3-0 at the Bell Centre. The bleu-blanc-rouge has still enjoyed success against Dallas in Montreal over the years. They hold a 39-13-9-0 record in 61 games against the Texas-based franchise in La Belle Province. Both teams will square off once again on Jan. 2 down south.
Tuesday night’s game will mark the first time that Erik Cole will go up against his former team since the Canadiens traded him to the Stars on Feb. 26. Having picked up two assists in Dallas’ win on Monday night in Buffalo, the 34-year-old forward now has one goal and five points in 11 games during the 2013-14 campaign. Montrealer Alex Chiasson will also be playing the first game of his career at the Bell Centre. Chiasson sits second in points for the Stars with nine.
After a night off on Monday, Carey Price will be back in goal for the Canadiens against Dallas. He boasts a 2-3-0 record in five previous appearances against the Stars. Either Kari Lehtonen or Dan Ellis will get the start between the pipes for Dallas.
