Flying out of the gate

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
WASHINGTON – The first 10 minutes of action could decide Game 2.

With almost 48 hours to stew over their stunning loss in Game 1, the Capitals are now hours from throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Habs tonight.

“It’s no secret that they’re going to come out with something to prove tonight,” said Josh Gorges. “We have to come out and match that intensity. If we have the kind of slow start we had in Game 1, we’re asking for trouble. We need to play a better overall game. If we can start the way we ended the first game, we’ll be fine. But they will be ready and we need to be, too.”

Coming off a gargantuan effort in the series opener with an assist on the OT winner and countless huge plays in his own end, fellow blue-liner Jaroslav Spacek is also in the loop that his work had just begun.

“It’s going to be a lot tougher for us tonight, I’ll tell you that much,” warned Spacek, who probably played his best game as Hab in Game 1. “The first game is over and done with. We have to focus on Game 2 now. Nothing else.”

While the first two nights of the 2010 NHL playoffs were an upset festival, normalcy returned on Friday night everywhere but in Chicago. Facing the possibility of going down 0-2 in their series despite being the favorites, the Devils, Penguins and Sharks all evened up their series with stronger efforts. Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals were surely paying attention.

With already one overtime win under their belts, the 2010 Canadiens still have a long way to go to match the league-record 10 overtime wins notched by the Habs when they won they last won the Stanley Cup in 1993. Such drama would suit Michael Cammalleri just fine.

“We need to work as hard as it takes it to win and if it comes down to that, then sure bring it on. The thing is, none of the guys from that 1993 Habs team is on this team, unless you count Kirk behind the bench,” said Cammalleri with a smirk.
