First Steps

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
MONTREAL – The first steps toward the continued development of hockey in Quebec were taken over the weekend, as the first Quebec Hockey Summit was held Friday and Saturday at the Bell Centre.

The Summit focused on multiple issues spanning from a look at long-term player development, to safety in the sport, to the player Program of Excellence. Over 400 individuals associated with the hockey in the Province of Quebec were in attended the event, taking in a variety of conferences.

Among them was Canadiens’ general manager Pierre Gauthier, who expressed his satisfaction at the topics covered at the Summit.

“It’s wonderful to see so many faces of the sport together under the same roof, meeting to discuss issues that that are truly important to hockey in Quebec,” said Gauthier after speaking alongside Bob Nicholson of Hockey Canada.

A few of the subjects touched upon were of particular interest to the Canadiens GM, especially ones dealing directly with Quebec players. Gauthier was quick to address the topic in as direct a manner as possible.

“No one is ever looked over because of where they come from or what language they speak. People need to stop thinking that way. Whether it’s in the NHL or on national teams, there’s only one rule that matters: take the best players and make the best teams possible to win.”

When asked about advancements made to the hot-topic of headshots in the sport, Gauthier mentioned that progress was still being made.

“There’s obviously a universal desire to eliminate headshots from the game, and we’re headed in the right direction. We want things to change, but we have to make sure that the right decisions are made, and doing that correctly takes time. I do believe that we will solve this problem. The people that are dealing with this issue are all individuals who truly have the best interests of the sport in their hearts.”
