Team B: 8
Team A: 3
The first scrimmage of the Canadiens’ development camp was held on Sunday afternoon as Team A, helmed by Donald Dufresne, and Team B, coached by Francis Bouillon, battled it out at the Bell Sports Complex.
Defenseman Noah Juulsen, who wasn’t supposed to participate in scrimmages due to injury, did finally receive the green light from the Canadiens’ medical staff to suit up and play. He sported a full visor for the game.
The opening goal came courtesy of the Canadiens’ third-round pick in 2016, William Bitten. The OHL standout took a superb feed from Nikita Scherbak and beat Zachary Fucale to give Team B a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Bitten capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone and went in solo on Fucale. This time around, though, the Rosemere native shut the door and kept Bitten off the scoresheet.
Fucale couldn’t do much to stop a solid wrist shot from Jeremy Gregoire midway through the opening frame, though. Gregoire’s blast found the short side, giving Team B a 2-0 lead.
Mikhail Sergachev tripped Gregoire later in the period. That led to a penalty shot opportunity for Gregoire, and he lit the lamp by beating Fucale five-hole to give Team B a 3-0 advantage.
While the opening frame was played at 4-on-4, the two teams switched to a 3-on-3 format for the final period.
Gregroire found the back of the net once again to complete his hat trick, pouncing on a loose puck in front of Fucale to put Team B up 4-0.
Charlie Lindgren was perfect up until the midway point of the period when Michael Pezzetta made it 4-1. Then, Martin Reway beat Lindgren on a penalty shot, cutting Team B’s lead to 4-2.
Jake Evans upped Team B’s lead to 5-2 on a one-timer, before Hayden McCool made it 6-2. Reid Duke scored for Team A to cut Team B’s lead to 6-3 with five minutes remaining. McCool and Bitten then capped the scoring for Team B as the contest finished up 8-3 in their favor.
Scrimmage No. 2 - July 3
Team C: 2
Team D: 2
The second scrimmage on Sunday afternoon featured Team C, helmed by Nick Carriere, against Team D, coached by Ken Morin.
Tom Parisi lit the lamp for Team C to open the scoring, beating goaltender Michael McNiven five minutes into the first period. McNiven and fellow netminder Hayden Hawkey kept both teams off the scoresheet for the remainder of the frame.
In the second period, Jeremiah Addison found the back of the net, putting the puck past Hawkey on a one-timer to tie things up 1-1.
With 10 minutes to go in the game, Markus Eisenschmid capitalized on a penalty shot opportunity and scored on McNiven to put Team C up 2-1.
But, with just 3.3 seconds to go, Giovanni Fiore denied Team C the win by tying things up 2-2 with Team D pulling McNiven in favor of an extra attacker.
