Question: Who was the first-ever player in NHL history to wear number 99?
Answer: Joe Lamb
Over the course of the 1934-35 season, three different members of the Canadiens wore the number that was made famous by Wayne Gretzky several decades later. It was the Habs’ Joe Lamb who was the first NHLer to ever sport No.99, wearing it for the initial seven games of the campaign before being traded to the Bruins on Dec. 4, 1934. Desse Roche and Léo Bourgault were next two to don the digit that eventually went on to be retired league-wide by the NHL.
