Canada fired 46 shots on net on route to a 4-0 shutout victory over France on Monday. The victory keeps Canada a perfect 6-0-0 and pulls them ahead of Finland at the top of Group B.
Habs right winger Brendan Gallagher for his part added his name to the scoresheet with an assist on Corey Perry’s insurance marker in the third period.
Canada’s final test of the preliminary-round comes against an undefeated (6-0-0) Finland squad that features one of the tournament’s leading scorers in Patrik Laine.
Russia vs. Norway
Russia and Norway squared off on Monday, as Alexander Ovechkin suited up for his second game of the tournament since joining Alexei Emelin and the Russian squad back on May 11.
With his club up 2-0 early in the third period, Emelin unleashed a hard slap-shot from the left point. The rebound caromed off the boards and bounced directly in front of Emelin’s teammate Roman Lyubimov, who connected with the puck in mid-air to light the lamp with a stunning display of hand-eye-coordination.
Russia, presently ranked 2nd in Group A, is set to conclude preliminary-round action on Tuesday May 17 against Sweden.
Denmark vs. Kazakhstan
Lars Eller and Denmark were back in action on Monday against Kazakhstan, fresh off their 2-1 shootout victory over the Czech Republic on Day 10 of the World Hockey Championships.
The Habs’ 27-year-old forward helped open the scoring by setting up Markus Lauridsen for a one-timer from the left point, which kicked off a series of four consecutive power-play goals on just four opportunities with the man advantage for Denmark.
Monday’s 4-1 win over Kazakhstan marks Eller’s final game of the preliminary-round. While Denmark has a chance at securing a birth in the quarter-finals, they will have to watch Switzerland’s game against the Czech Republic closely on Tuesday to see where they end up in the Group A standings.
