I’ve played in three games so far. We beat France and lost to Russia and then the Swiss in OT. It was fun to play against Yannick Weber
since we roomed together toward the end of the season and really got along great. I’ve been playing on a line mostly with Joe Pavelski of the Sharks and Ryan Shannon of the Senators. I’ve played on teams with Shanny since I was 11 years old so it’s a lot of fun for us to be reunited on the same line for the US.
I was very anxious to play my first game. I had to sit and watch two games in the preliminary round due to roster rules, so that was basically torture. Finally getting into the lineup and playing alongside my teammates was a big thrill. I was a bit worried the summer rust had begun to set in because I hadn’t played since the last game against the Bruins. The body was shocked back into game shape pretty quickly, though I think my legs wanted to be on a beach somewhere.
If you’ve seen highlights or pictures from the games, you’ve probably noticed I’m wearing number 18. I wore it when I played at Yale and when I played at the two World Junior tourneys. I originally asked for 18 when I joined the Habs but we all know why I didn’t get it. Side note - does anyone remember me wearing number 88 for my first two NHL games? Probably not, because by the end of those two games I was sitting on my gloves because my butt hurt so much (I played maybe three and a half minutes). What a bad number that was!
You’re probably all wondering about the Bear Pit. Well, it was a disaster, plain and simple. The bear has apparently died. I’m not joking. I went down there four times before I realized the poor guy was in bear heaven. I don’t know what else to say except that I’m extremely disappointed.
I haven’t taken any pictures really because I am terrible at that. I never take pictures of anywhere I travel, but for this trip I did bring my camcorder. I’ve gotten some great footage of the town of Bern and was able to capture some pretty hilarious moments of my teammates goofing around the hotel.
Aside from that, I haven’t done anything too exciting since I’ve been here (stupid bear let me down). Anyone who has spent some time with me knows that food sometimes runs my life. I’m always on a search for new foods and restaurants and this trip has obviously not been different. I’ve eaten way too much pizza, sausage, schnitzel, and chocolate this tournament, though I can’t help myself because it’s all been fantastic. The summer chunk is starting to set in. I’m worried my new bikini won’t fit!
As if the bear-less Bear Pit wasn't enough...
