MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Saturday that the team has traded defenseman Joel Edmundson to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 3rd-round pick (initially belonging to the Minnesota Wild) and the Capitals' 7th-round pick in 2024. The Canadiens will retain 50% of Edmundson's salary for the last year of his contract.

Edmundson joined the Canadiens via a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on September 12, 2020. The 30-year-old defenseman played 140 games with Montreal, registering 32 points (8 goals, 24 assists) and serving 118 penalty minutes.
