Former Avalanche defenseman brings over 300 games of AHL experience to Montreal blue line


MONTREAL - Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of defenseman Jeff Paul to a one-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Paul, 27, played in 54 games with the AHL's Portland Pirates in 2004-05, registering three points (one goal, two assists) and 137 penalty minutes. The London, ON native was selected in the second round, 42nd overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder played in two NHL regular season games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2002-03. In 301 career AHL games split between Norfolk, Hershey, San Antonio and Hartford, Paul consistently ranked among the league leaders in penalty minutes.
