MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens and Molson jointly announced Thursday the recipients of the 2006-07 Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence. The awards are presented annually to amateur hockey players who best combine success on the ice with scholastic achievements.

Created back in 1985, the program's objective aims at encouraging sports and scholastic excellence for players from three major amateur hockey leagues in Quebec; the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), the Quebec member schools of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), and the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League. The winners are selected by a jury consisting of representatives from the hockey and education communities. Recipients of the Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence receive a $6,000 scholarship from Molson over a 3-year period while the winner of the Guy Lafleur Award of Merit is awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

A 20-year old student at CEGEP Baie-Comeau in Human and Social Sciences, Alexandre achieved a 29.486 academic average this year. His athletic and scholastic performances in 2006-07 earned him the Canadian Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year award as well as the Marcel-Robert Trophy as the QMJHL Scholastic Player of the Year.
