MONTREAL - Keeping with tradition, the players, coaching staff and ambassadors of the Montreal Canadiens will take part in the Canadiens' 24th Annual Blood Drive on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Bell Centre. Like every year, donors are expected for this special day to help Hma-Qubec collect some 600 units of blood.
Bell Centre doors will open at 8 a.m. to welcome donors. Every hour throughout the day, and until 7 p.m., different players and Montreal Canadiens Alumni will be there to thank the donors for their generosity.
This year, the Bgin family will act as spokespeople of the Blood Drive. "As a hockey player and father, I am in a position to appreciate the importance of giving blood, not only for our generation but for those to come," said Canadiens forward Steve Bgin. "I am proud to contribute to an activity that is as essential as the Blood Drive because I know that each unit of blood will have a direct impact on the life of at least one person", added Steve Bgin's wife, Amlie Cadrin.
The Canadiens' Blood Drive was initiated by Jean Bliveau and Claude Mouton in 1981. Since 1998, the Montreal Canadiens organize their drive in collaboration with Hma-Qubec, the supplier of blood in Qubec.
"The Canadiens' Blood Drive is very important since the expected number of donors represent two thirds of the daily blood supply in Qubec. The data registered between 1998 and 2003 shows that close to 5,000 units were collected with an average of 660 units at each Blood Drive. It should be known that to meet Quebecers' needs Hma-Qubec must collect a minimum of 1,000 donations per day. This comes to demonstrate how important the Canadiens' Blood Drive is for blood transfusion recipients," said Dr Francine Dcary, Chief Executive Officer of Hma-Qubec.
The Blood Drive counts on the collaboration of media partners RDS, CJAD and CKAC to promote the event and ensure its success.
