MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced on Sunday that the team has acquired defenseman Jon Merrill from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2021 (previously acquired from Ottawa) and forward Hayden Verbeek.

Merrill, 29, appeared in 36 games with the Red Wings this season, registering five assists, posting a plus-2 differential, and serving 12 penalty minutes. The 6'03'' and 195 lbs defenseman also recorded 35 shots on goal.
An Oklahoma City, OK native, Merrill has played 392 career games in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights and the Red Wings since making his NHL debut in 2013-14. The left-handed rearguard has amassed 66 points (12 goals, 54 assists) over the course his eight-year career, and served 207 penalty minutes.
Merrill was selected in the second round (38th overall) by the Devils in the 2010 NHL Draft.
