Bold predictions

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
MONTREAL – It may not even be September yet, but if you’re an avid hockey fan/pool-addict, it’s time to stroll by your neighborhood newsstand; the 2012-13 prediction guides are out.

After watching the Canadiens finish out the season in the basement of the Eastern Conference, it’s little surprise that predictions for 2012-13 see the Habs kicking things up a notch. While there’s definitely increased optimism surrounding the team these days, prediction-guide editors across the board seem set on reminding fans not to get too carried away. The general consensus has the Canadiens pegged to finish on the outside-looking-in at the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

Of the four publications we perused, one has the Habs slated for a 10th place finish in the East, while two others have them in 11th. The fourth – the Super Guide Hockey 2012-13 from The Hockey News is focused more on individual player projections rather than overall team standings.

The Sports Forecaster has the Canadiens closing out their season fourth in the Northeast Division, with the Bruins nabbing first place in the East. Hockey: The Magazine calls it a little differently, crowning the Pittsburgh Penguins as kings of the East, while Pool Pro gives the nod to John Tortorella’s ever-improving Rangers for top honors in the conference.

Last year, the Canadiens proved that predictions can often be wrong, falling short of early projections thanks to an injury-riddled season. Michel Therrien has every intention of proving predictions wrong for a second-straight year, this time by making it to the NHL’s second season.
