MONTREAL – The Canadiens might not have gotten the results they wanted from their 2011-12 campaign, but that doesn’t mean it still didn’t come with its share of spectacular plays. Now it’s time to turn the spotlight on this year’s best of the best and help choose the Montreal Canadiens Play of the Year.
Every Monday throughout the season, you were invited to vote for your favorite Play of the Week, with every weekly winner earning its way into the Play of the Year bracket. Then – because it wouldn’t be a tournament without a little unpredictability – we threw a few wildcard options into the mix to try and win your votes.
Out to defend his title once again, fan favorite, Carey Price is back in full force. Whether he’s pulling some quick acrobatics to wrangle a wild bounce in “Unexpected!” or making a show-stopping save in “‘A’ For Second Effort”, the Canadiens netminder is out to prove he’s as sharp as ever. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Price has held the Play of the Year crown the last three years running.
But before he can lay claim to the four-peat, Price will have to square off against some stiff competition from the rest of the Canadiens youth, with Lars Eller, David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty, Alexei Emelin and of course, P.K. Subban all turning in highlight reel moments.
Canadiens top gun, Erik Cole, also helped up the ante with three of his team-topping 35 goals winning their way into tournament, and career-Hab, Tomas Plekanec, has three sparkling plays of his own on hand, ready for battle.
Mathieu Darche, Louis Leblanc, Peter Budaj, Rene Bourque and Josh Gorges will also all be looking to dethrone the king with their series of eye catching goals and saves.
Over the weeks to come, you’ll be able to stop in daily and vote for the best plays, chipping away at the competition until only one remains. Will your favorite rise to the top? Vote and make sure it does.
