He has all the qualities the Habs brass were looking for in a leader: respected, respectful and a proven winner.

On September 29, 2010, after the Canadiens spent the entire 2009-10 season without a captain, Brian Gionta meets the media with a “C” sewn to his jersey, succeeding Saku Koivu as the 28th captain in franchise history. 

Two weeks later just before the team’s home opener on October 13, Gionta puts some of his newfound language skills to use, introducing his teammates to the 21,273 fans in attendance in French.
