A ray of light

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens
With a heavy heart, Georges Laraque still gave everyone something to smile about.

59 games later, Laraque finally scored his first goal as a Montreal Canadien. It wasn’t the only good news he got that day as his uncle finally contacted him from embattled Haiti to say he was one of the lucky ones in light of the recent earthquake. Without a shot on goal over his 26 games on the season, Laraque certainly made his first one count by beating Marty Turco, triggering quite the memorable celebration by the Habs heavyweight.

“Scoring that first goal meant a lot to me, it was really important. The next few weeks aren’t going to be easy in light of what’s happening in Haiti and I’m going to have to concentrate more than ever to do my job,” admitted Laraque. “Right now I also have my hands full trying to raise funds and involve myself more than ever, but I need to also keep focusing on the task at hand.

“This was a big day for me and my family. I really appreciate the wonderful gesture the team made towards the tragedy in Haiti,” continued Laraque about the Canadiens fundraising campaign which will see the team match all donations made by their fans over the next few games at the Bell Centre. “There is a huge Haitian population here in Montreal and that kind of support for our community just shows everyone the kind of respect and class the Canadiens organization is all about.”

Teammate Benoit Pouliot was among those not surprised to see Big Georges lift the spirits of his community by lighting the lamp.

“We pretty much told Georges that he had to score tonight,” smiled Pouliot . “We got on his case between the first and second period and we all couldn’t believe it when he did score. He totally fired up the bench there too, the guys were going crazy when he beat Marty Turco and celebrated the way he did. It was perfect. And we weren’t about to lose tonight when we saw Georges score.”
