A meeting with the champs

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

MONTREAL – The Canadiens will take on the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in their home opener on October 18 at the Bell Centre.

Last season, Michel Therrien’s troops posted a 1-1-1 record against Mike Sullivan’s squad.

The last time the two teams met in the Canadiens’ first tilt of the year on home turf was back on October 10, 1992 at the Montreal Forum. Interestingly enough, the Canadiens have never dropped their home opener to Pittsburgh, picking up two wins (1976 and 1984) and registering one tie (1992).

The Canadiens will also be taking part in the Buffalo Sabres’ home opener on October 13 at the First Niagara Center.

The complete NHL schedule for the 2016-17 campaign will be released on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
