The Habs may have turned 100 this year, but the league’s oldest franchise is no aging dinosaur. Embracing social media of all shapes and sizes, Habs fans are more connected than ever to their favorite team.
And those followers keep growing by the day in Habsland. Tweeting about all things bleu-blanc-rouge, the Canadiens’ officitial Twitter account @CanadiensMTL now includes over 50,000 loyal followers and counting. In the world of pro sports, the Canadiens are at the head of the class, trailing only two MLB teams and two NBA teams in followers.
Last year’s NBA finalists, the Lakers and the Magic are the sole members of the exclusive “Million Followers” club. On the diamond, the Phillies and Yankees pace the league with 563,254 and 276,823 followers, respectively.
Recently passing the 50,000 fan benchmark – 15,000 more than their next closest competitor – the Habs rank fifth among all professional sports franchises as far as Twitter is concerned, edging out the defending Cup champion Penguins to round out the Top 5.
