Russia 4 - Czech Republic 3
Pretournament action at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey got underway on Thursday. One of the first matchups featured Team Russia and Team Czech Republic at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The Canadiens had two representatives on site - Andrei Markov for the Russians, and Tomas Plekanec , who was captaining the Czech contingent. Markov got on the scoresheet first, picking up an assist on Vladimir Tarasenko's power play goal in the second period that made it 2-1 for Team Russia.
For his part, Plekanec began the Czech comeback with three minutes remaining in the game and his squad down 4-2. Even though his efforts led to his first goal in pretournament play, it was too little, too late for Josef Jandac's club, which ultimately dropped a 4-3 decision.
