2016 World Cup of Hockey — Pre-tournament Game — Czech Republic vs. Russia

by Staff Writer / Montréal Canadiens

Czech Republic 2 — Russia 1

Tomas Plekanec and Alexei Emelin were in action for Czech Republic and Russia, respectively, on Saturday at a pre-tournament game hosted at the O2 Arena in Prague.

The two sides were tied after 40 minutes, despite a Czech offense which fired 15 shots on goal in the first period alone. It was Nikita Kucherov who finally opened the scoring at the start of the third period, with an assist from Emelin. The Habs defenseman also dished out five hits over 17:40 of ice time.

Plekanec meanwhile, Czech captain at the tournament, tested Russian goaltender Semyon Varlamov with seven shots on goal, eventually tying things up with under two minutes to go. The Habs center was his side’s most used forward, with 23:33 of ice time.

Without a winner following overtime, it was Ales Hemsky who decided the game in a shootout — a first pre-tournament win for the Czechs this year.
