Wiley Sherman Excited to be Selected by Bruins

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins -
Wiley Sherman is not your typical high school student. On June 30th, the 6’5” 205 pound defenseman was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 5th round of the 2013 NHL Entry draft.

“Well the day of the draft was pretty much a normal day in the morning. I woke up went to breakfast and then just kind of sat around until we left.”

What started out as a normal day for Sherman quickly morphed into a day that he would never forget.

“When I got there it was awesome. It was so cool to see. The first three rounds were televised, so that was really fun to watch.”

For the Greenwich Connecticut native, being drafted by the Bruins was a dream come true.

“I couldn't have been happier. It’s awesome. I love Boston. I love the city so I know there’s only good things to come forward.”

With his strong love for Boston, it is no surprise that when it came time for Sherman to make his college selection he followed that love to Harvard University. The 18-year-old will be joining the Crimson in 2014 and could not be more enthusiastic.

“The minute I visited the campus I knew I wanted to go there. It was pretty much a no-brainer for me.”

But before he straps on his skates and glides onto the NCAA Division I ice, Sherman is headed back to the Hotchkiss School in for one more year of high school hockey. And the blueliner already has some goals in mind for finishing out his high school career.

“I’m just hoping to accomplish gaining a lot of weight. I want to make sure I’m a lot stronger. I want to get to the next level before I get to college.”

Sherman firmly believes the experience he had at the Bruins Development Camp this month will help him take his game to that next level.

“It was definitely a new level of play that I’ve never experienced before so I think helped me just develop as a hockey player. All these kids are a lot older than me, so it was definitely a good experience.”
