BOSTON BRUINS HEAD COACH CLAUDE JULIEN
On Soderberg and his conditioning…
He’s looking good. He’s lost weight but he’s also gained some muscle. He was already a strong player to start with. I think he’s looking good. When you see him in those battle drills, he’s pretty strong on the puck and we like that about him. He’s got a good skill level, he can shoot the puck well and make plays so he’ll get a great opportunity in those preseason games to showcase himself and show the improvement.

On if Soderberg getting more conditioned was something Coach wanted him to do…
Yeah, absolutely and I think he recognized that himself last year by looking around the dressing room and when he played and seeing how well conditioned you have to be to play this game. Every second night, especially in the playoffs and the grind of the schedule that we had when he came here was pretty impressive and eye opening for him. So I think recognizing that, he took the appropriate measures to get himself in shape so that he can be able to sustain that kind of tempo.

On where Soderberg will be used…
Yeah, I can’t say a ton because we came in so late, he didn’t play that many games then we put him again in the playoffs for a few games so that’s why I’m saying those preseason games will hopefully help us and give us a better idea and probably one of the tough decisions is going to be [Chris] Kelly on the third line being the centerman and him being a centerman one of the guys may end up having to play the wing if that’s the case. So that’s what we are going to have to decide down the road, what is the better scenario. So that’s where it stands right now but again those are just kind of answers that I am giving you now. As we go along we talked about the different scenarios yesterday whether [Daniel] Paille is the guy that should move up there on the left side and different players that we’ve gotten through some trades, so there are a lot of things. [Jordan] Caron’s in the mix, so we’ve got some, obviously some tough decisions to make here in the next few weeks.

On being opposed to having three left shots…
You work with what you got, it’s not the end of the world and you have to make due with what you have and in way, what is the best scenario. I know Jordan’s [Caron] played a lot of the right side, he played that in Juniors, I know he’s played that in Providence as well, we’ve used him there a few times. So it’s not like Jordan’s not capable of playing on the right side and then there’s [Riley] Smith, another guy that we got from Dallas that is having a really good camp. And on the left side, [Matt] Fraser is one of those guys that we can’t over look either. And that’s why I think down the road with some of those other guys from Providence, we’re going to have some tough decisions to make.

On who has caught his attention out of the younger guys…
There’s a lot of them. There’s nobody that is kind of on his own but there are a lot of good players who are showing some good things here. I think those kind of answers to me get answered during those preseason games because you’ve got some players that, going out would look great in practice but get them in a game situation they're really good players. And then you get the opposite, guys that are fine in practice, look great and you thing wow I cant wait to see them in a game and the game starts and he becomes invisible or nothing gets accomplished. So you get those kind of players so to me, I’m careful about assessing players before I see them in a real game or a game type situation.

On what approach Torey Krug needs to take in training camp…
I think in listening to some of his comments, I think his approach is I got to make this team and I have to earn my spot. I would say that is the right attitude because you don’t want to be a splash in the pan, I don’t think he is, but I’m just saying it’s up to him to continue to prove that he belongs. And we’ve see that often, where guys have a good start and things go well and all of a sudden they think they’ve got it made and get comfortable and then first thing they know they get pushed out. So it’s about being careful and it’s not like you’ve poured yourself a reputation in this league where you're a bonafied NHLer and if it’s not here, it ill be somewhere else. I think it is important that he continues to show that he can play at this level and a couple rounds of playoffs doesn’t accomplish that.

On the hybrid icing…
Obviously, you’ll get a chance to see it in the preseason. For coaches, I think it’s a bit of a mixed feeling, we’re very supportive of it when it comes to the safety of the players. I think what it does sometimes it takes away some of the plays and you’ve seen us use at time before, right from inside our blueline we’d rim the puck in and had our fore check just to get the puck in deep so that kind of, probably will, take that away and be an automatic icing by the time the puck got passed the goal line, nobody would be close to it. So there’s some things that you lose out of that but at the same time I think right now we’re looking at the safety of players. From what I hear, the General Mangers are really in favor of it and really support it and then I guess the players will get to see it first and see how they feel about it. But I would say mixed feelings. Supportive for the security of it, or the safety of it I should say but a little disappointed in the fact that we lose some of those plays we’ve used.

On holding scrimmage tomorrow…
We scrimmaged today you missed it [laughs]. We’re going do what we have to do and kind of for our team and I know there’s going be some fans in here we may, we’ll look at, again we always look at our practice over the morning of and see if we can if there’s certain things we can adjust, we did that today too there was certain drills we pushed aside because we felt the need to focus on the other areas a little better so we’ll do that we may again have maybe, ten minutes fifteen minutes of scrimmage at some point but, I can’t guarantee that right now.

On how busy the preseason has been…
Yeah, I don’t think it’s busier than normal, I mean, seven games, to me it’s basically what we’ve had in the past you know and with the number to me with the number of prospects we have battling for spots its probably not a bad thing to get an opportunity to see them and give them more than just one game before you make those decisions. So, certainly it’ll help in our situation obviously there’s a little bit of travel involved there when you talk about going to Manitoba and Saskatoon but you know give us a chance to bond.

On tightening the gap with drills…
Well it’s not always about what last season brought it’s more sometimes it’s important when you’ve had the same coaching staff, when you’ve had the same players, a lot of the core players it’s important to create some excitement and there’s certain areas you can always fix that you think your team is ready for and basically as much as our core players are still the same, our core of our system is still there so you just tweak a few things here and there it keeps the guys sharp and it kind of excites them a little bit to do something different and right now we looked at some of those things we’re already doing but need to do better so we’ve addressed some of those issues that we thought were lacking in those areas and at the same time like you said little bit more aggressive where we feel that a team can play a little bit more on the offensive half of the ice first of all it’d be a lot more fun and hopefully more productive as well.

On Jarome Iginla adjusting early…
Jarome [Iginla]’s been around for a long time so I think its important for him in his mind to know these things and then he’s got those exhibition games and those weeks to kind of work through it and what he probably wants to do which is what I want to do as a coach is have those things become second nature the last thing you want is for players to overthink and when they overthink that’s when you get yourself in trouble so its got to be natural so I think for him its important to get those things early because he wants that to become second nature for him so you know its probably good for those kind of guys that been around for a long time that understand when there’s a change what has to happen.

On when there will be cuts made to the roster…

That’s something Peter [Chiarelli] and I talk as we go along here sometimes you know we say okay well there’s certain guys there it’s pretty clear and let’s bring the group down a little bit and at the same time you know you got a lot of games and you know you don’t want to overtax certain players and veterans that have played a lot last year so on and so forth so we keep guys around and give them a look around and give the veterans a bit of a break here so that’s something that we don’t really say we’re going be down this number after this game or so on but you know we have an idea of when we’re going to start bring it down. I think maybe there maybe some few cuts before we even play our first exhibition game I’d say it could be a few may not be that many but just a few and you know we got back to back games and there’s a good chance you’re going to see one team playing one night and then the next team another group play the other night a totally different group so you know it’s first two games is an opportunity to give everyone a chance so that may be what you see

On Chris Kelly after his injury…

Starting fresh or maybe starting where he left off in the last round I thought maybe in the last round he was much better I thought he played some of his best hockey then and it seemed like he was finding his game again I thought after the injury it really took him a long time to find his game and he just didn’t seem to be quite the same player and I don’t mean that I think after a while it got in his head and  the pressure of not scoring and the expectations and the new contract everything else all that stuff kind of weighed on a player whether you’re a veteran or not you know you’re there you want be a positive attribute to your team and when he was looking at his plus minuses and when he was looking at his line not scoring, but getting scored on I think that stuff as a leader kind of weighed on him a little bit but he was able to overcome that I thought at least in the last round or in the playoffs he started playing much better so I’m hoping that he’s going to start this year the way he ended last year.
