Danvers, MA – On Friday, Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas visited Danvers High School to award a $7,500 scholarship to 12th grader Michele Roy.

Thomas, along with State Treasurer Tim Cahill, and in conjunction with Liberty Bay Credit Union and 98.5 The Sports Hub and the Bruins Radio Network, presented Roy with the Grand Prize of the Saving For Your Future essay contest.

Roy, a graduating senior, wrote about saving money -- how it has influenced her life and how saving will continue to be a positive influence on her future.

“She wrote an essay about saving," said Thomas after presenting the award.
"Apparently she was heavily influenced by her grandfather so it must have been a good essay and she ended up wining the scholarship.

"Today was about awarding her the scholarship and giving her the recognition she deserved for winning the contest.”

The whole school packed into the gymnasium at Danvers High to watch Roy get the award from the veteran goaltender.

From the way the crowd was cheering for him it was surprising how nervous Thomas felt speaking in front the adoring students.

“It was fine until my first joke flopped," said Thomas with a big smile.  "I got a little bit nervous,”

“Obviously [the team] is used to performing in front of enormous amounts of people, but I don’t really have to talk in front of that many people.”

Not many people noticed his flopped joke and he had a line of people waiting to get pictures and autographs in the school’s gym.

The second part of the Liberty Bank Credit Union award was money to help renovate the high school over the next two years.

“It was a different experience,” said Thomas, “but it was great. It’s great to see that Danvers High School is renovating and expanding and that will be good for the [the students in] Danvers.”
