I was in the North End rink the other day and it was very interesting to me. I went in to say hi to someone and came away very surprised at what was happening on the ice.
It was a Saturday afternoon at about 3 and there was a game going on. Not very strange I know, but the part I found interesting was the age group. It was a men’s league game. I know there are lots of leagues, but I was very surprised that it was men in their 20’s and 30’s playing on a weekend afternoon. I just expected it to be kids.
Another thing that was great was the level of play. From what I saw, everyone was a good skater and had good puck skills. It was great to see. It also seemed to be fairly intense, but at the same time, no one looked like they were being clowns. To me, that showed that all the players respected each other and the game. Great!
The last thing I noticed was strange. One of the teams was using the trap. The trap! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Again, the trap, I was amazed. These guys were together on a Saturday afternoon playing the trap. We don’t like the trap. It’s not much fun. But, there at the North End rink on a Saturday afternoon, a group of guys with no coach was using the trap. I still can’t believe it. A lot of pro teams have a tough time staying patient enough to use the trap, but these guys were doing it perfectly. Amazing! These guys really love the game. A trap on Saturday afternoon. That’s why hockey in Boston is great.
The fan base has some hockey smarts. In my opinion, if you want to play the trap on a Saturday afternoon for fun, feel free to call WEEI and bitch. You’ve earned it. This Saturday though, I would really like to see the Left Wing Lock.
