Tank Top on Toivo

by Staff Writer / Boston Bruins

Surely everyone knows by now, that Tim Thomas and Hannu Toivonen are very close friends and teammates, and while many people wondered how Hannu would take the demotion, some wondered how Thomas, the clear number one Bruins goalie for most of the season, would take his goaltending partner’s departure.

"Me and Hannu are good friends," said Tim Thomas when asked about Hannu’s being assigned to the P-Bruins. "So, it’s sort of a difficult situation."

"But that’s the way the life of hockey is, unfortunately."

So, Thomas and new Bruins goalie, Joey MacDonald (#31 in your game program), became a tandem today.

"I just met Joey this morning," said an otherwise cheerful Thomas. "He seems like a nice guy."

"Hopefully he can help our team out."

When asked about the trade that Atlanta made for Keith Tkachuk, Thomas said that it was a positive for the Thrashers.

"A player like that is going to help," he explained. "Sometimes when a player gets traded though, they don’t help right off the bat."

Obviously, Tim was thinking about the B’s game versus Atlanta, this evening.

"I hope that’s what happens, tonight," said Thomas with a huge grin.

For his part, new Bruins backstop MacDonald intuits his role and will be happy to fulfill it.

"We have not talked a whole lot," said Joey of the B’s coaching staff. "I just got into town, yesterday.

"Timmy here (to his right in the locker room) is playing great. So I just want to get a chance, we have (21) games left and there is a lot of hockey left.

"So I will just wait for the opportunity (and when it comes) I have to take full advantage of it."

Good news: It sounds as if MacDonald grew up admiring the Spoked-B.

"I’m from Nova Scotia," he explained. "So I was always a Bruins fan, too.

"So, just a chance to come here, another Original Six team, and the tradition here, it’s just like the Red Wings. So, I am really excited and just can’t wait."

As far as his previous partners, MacDonald learned from following their example.

"To work with guys like Hasek and Osgood, guys with over 300 wins, was great (just to see) how they work…and the things they do off-ice, too," he said.

Was MacDonald surprised to be let go by Detroit?

"I didn’t think they were going to go with three goalies throughout the playoffs," said MacDonald. "When I heard I was coming here, I was just really excited and just couldn’t wait to get here.

"(I’m excited) just to get the chance to be the number two guy here, and just work hard everyday, and take advantage of the opportunity."
