Hi fellow fans, I’m back after a longer break than anticipated…
We just went through a long camp – while it was short in the actual number of days, it was long in meetings and difficult decisions that we had to make to set our final roster for today.
What drove a lot of our decisions this year was that we wanted to ice the best team possible right now. This year presented a challenge for us, because we don’t have the flexibility to go beyond the cap in performance bonuses. That, coupled with Blake Wheeler’s strong performance in camp, forced us to make some hard decisions. Those decisions were very difficult with Peter Schaefer, Jeremy Reich (who was a warrior for us last year), and Nate Thompson (who was ultimately picked up on waivers by the Islanders).
It was a long process, and please understand this: we’re trying to ice the best team available
One of the casualties in the short term was Vladimir Sobotka - who we really like for his style of play, his enthusiasm, and his youth. I think you’re going to see him back fairly soon.
It’s all part of the process in trying to bring you a winning team, and it is a difficult time having to sit in the meetings with these players and tell them that they’re released after some of the service they’ve given us. But, that’s part of the business and that’s part of today’s cap environment.
So, I’m off today to join the team in Colorado, where we open up the season.
I’ll be back to you shortly.
